Illinois State University Campus Visit

Please respond to your experience during our field trip to Illinois State University. (What was your favorite part of the trip? What did you learn? How did the trip make you feel about college? Are you truly ready to go to college? What do you still need to do before you leave high school? Etc.) I am looking for a journal-type entry. Please respond in three to five paragraphs. (Yes, this means you must use complete sentences.)

  1. Our campus visit to Illinois State University was very interesting. It was also very eye-opening. I have always known that I wanted to go to a small college and this huge university just looks overwhelming to me. I felt as though I was in the middle of an unfamiliar city all alone. I definitely learned that a big school is not for me.

It was also very interesting that with the total enrollment over 40,000 the teacher to student ratio was still 19 to 1. I think that's good for the students to go there and it is important in a good education. I also think it is very important to your education to know your teachers. This trip really reassured me that I have made the right college choice.

I feel that I am mostly ready for college. I am 100% ready to meet new people and essentially start over. I am excited and scared at the same. I think it'll be hard to live away from home, even though it is not that far away. Before going to college, I need to finish this school year out strong in order to keep my academic scholarship.

  2. My favorite part of this trip was seeing what the students thought about the college they were going to. I learned that ISU was a very big school, yet there were enough professors there to really get to know you. Especially within the English department, which I am interested in.

The trip made me feel more prepared for college. It felt like it was mostly for kids trynig to prepare to go to college. The college really doesn't interest me because I'm only interested in smaller schools. I do still have a few more things to do before college. I still need to sign up for classes and get a roommate.

After looking at ISU, I am definitely happy with the choice that I made for college. I don't believe that I can really be a part of a bigger school like ISU. I feel like Millikin is a great fit for me and I will stay academically strong in that school.

  3. My favorite part of ISU was the campus tour. I liked how all the different departments were close in location. I learned that ISU has many more majors than most schools around. If a student was going into college undecided on a major ISU could help them go into a field they would like.

The trip made me realize I have alot of things to do before I start college in the fall. I am ready to start college and be more independent, but I still need to meet with advisors and take placement tests before I can start. I also need to sign up for classes.

Before I head off to college I still need to stay focused on my grades and become a better, faster and more knowledgable softball player.

ISU is a definate possibility for me in two years, after junior college. I liked that is was a very big campus, but still had only 19 students per class. It is also close, but far from home.

  4. My favorite part about the trip was of course avantis. But other than that i enjoyed walking around in the area with all of the departments. It helped me see what choices are out there other than just accounting. I found other majors or fields that I would enjoy looking into.

I learned that there is a lot more to college. In order to go to college of course you need to find the money first. The man put it point blank for us and i now know what I need to focus on now. I also learned that even though the school is large the student to teacher ratio is still little.

I feel that I am ready for college. I do have lots of things i still need to do. I need to work on getting money and also taking placement tests to get ready for scheduling my classes.

  5. My favorite part about the trip was the the tour. I liked walking around and looking at the campus and seeing what they had to offer. I realized that the campus was way bigger than I thought.

I learned that college is going to be more difficult than I thought. I need to keep consistant with my good grades and keep it the same in college. I need to be living in the now and planning for the future.

I think that I am ready for college. I am ready to get out of high school and get a taste of the real world. I have two jobs now and I am saving up to help my parents pay for college books. I still have to do a lot of things for registering for college.
